4 Things to Know About Bucket Trucks and Snow

A Bucket Truck in Snow

A simple definition of bucket trucks is that they are some kind of big trucks which have an open top platform, the “bucket”, which looks like a basket, and is sometimes called an aerial lift. This “bucket” is attached at the end of an arm called a “boom”. It can be raised and moved around, and is used to carry workers to work above and high off the ground. During winter, the snow season, these trucks come live to perform several functions.

A Bucket Truck can be very useful when it comes to restoring power lines brought down by snow. The “bucket” is well insulated even if it comes in to contact with live power lines to protect the workers. Similarly so, when it comes to trimming of tree branches that have become heavy due to snow accumulation, posing a danger of breaking loose and falling on to people and property, these trucks come to the rescue. However, snowy conditions make working with these trucks very difficult. The roads become very slippery, there is poor visibility, and the very cold temperatures do not help either. There are four basic things you should know to help you with your truck in snow conditions.

Bucket Trucks Need More Lights

Start by fitting your truck with more lights. Headlights alone are not sufficient for the poor visibility conditions. To increase your visibility, more powerful lights need to be installed. Besides helping the truck driver, they also help the oncoming traffic as well. A distant glow helps to warn an oncoming vehicle that there is another vehicle coming in the opposite lane.

Bucket Trucks Need Chains

Thin ice formed on the roads make controlling your truck very hard. It reduces traction, making the roads very slippery. To help with this, you should fit your rubber tires with metal chains. These chains help break through the thin layer of ice improving traction and road grip, thus increasing your control of the bucket truck on the road.

Bucket Trucks Need Engine Heaters

The possibility of freezing of your bucket truck’s fuel due to the cold temperatures is high. Should this happen, your truck would be rendered useless. However, to overcome this possibility, these trucks are fitted with propane heaters. They heat the engine prior to starting. You should also ensure that your truck only uses winter grade fuel and engine lubricant that is able to resist freezing even in the coldest of weather conditions. As for the radiators, use an anti-freeze to avoid the water inside from solidifying.

Bucket Trucks Need Heavy Duty Wipers

Invest in some good heavy duty wipers for your truck. These help to add on better visibility during snow and also rain. They remove snow flakes and rain drops away from the windshield, allowing you a better view of the road ahead. Most trucks come with the heavy duty wipers installed from the manufacturer. Your role as the truck owner or driver is to take good care of them, replace them when need be, and to learn to use them appropriately.

Other Bucket Truck Tips for Winter Use

Besides these four important notes, you should also learn to operate your truck effectively. For instance, learn how to bring down the boom if the regular mechanisms fail. Emergency stops as well as the emergency lowering functions should always be functional. Above all, ensure that the bucket of your vehicle is always clean. Remember that these bucket trucks are very essential for aerial repair during the winter season, and should thus be given the appropriate care and attention.
