There will be many memories to recall once a business has learned everything about the purchase of a bucket truck for their company. Before such stories can be told, the beginning point is with the decision to purchase such a vehicle. There will always be initial concerns about obtaining the right model necessary for the needs of that business. Consideration may need to be given to the reaching capacity of the boom, which depends greatly on the nature of the business and the tasks to be performed. For example, if a business prunes trees, then it is imperative to purchase equipment that has a higher boom reach than the height of the average tree that will be trimmed. This is just one of many things to consider when purchasing an aerial platform lift for a business.
When purchasing a bucket truck for the first time, there will be both advantages and disadvantages to consider.
Advantages
During these times of economic recession, buying a new aerial lift device for a business is probably not the wisest decision to make. It is often better to purchase a used model because of the numerous advantages it has to offer.
- Affordable – Used models are much less expensive in comparison to new ones. Though a brand new vehicle is obviously the best type to purchase, it is usually not within the budget of most companies. It is still possible to find used lifting equipment that is still like new and very functional.
- High Quality – Due to the economic crisis, many of these vehicles were repossessed with very low usage. So their quality is still high but their price is incredibly low.
- Boom Length – Simply because this equipment may have been previously owned does not mean it is not available with different boom-reaching capacities. As when purchasing these vehicles new, a boom length can be chosen that is perfectly suited for a particular business application.
- Hybrid – Where fuel efficiency and environmental safety is a concern, there is always the option to choose “green.” Used hybrid bucket trucks are now available for purchase. They can conserve fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions which is a great option considering high fuel prices. Admittedly, the price of hybrid vehicles is slightly more expensive in comparison to their conventional counterparts.
Disadvantages
While there are many advantages to purchasing this equipment previously owned, there are also some disadvantages.
- Decreased Efficiency – Since this equipment has been used, the level of efficiency will also decrease. Unlike a new model where the control system, engine, and hydraulics are still fully operational, previously-owned equipment may require some repair work in these areas.
- Increased Maintenance – To ensure these vehicles are in good working condition, they will need to be sent to a service center for regular maintenance. This will ensure that any operation will not be impeded by the breakdown of the equipment.
- Increased Wear on Parts – The prior use of this equipment may mean the parts and accessories are more prone to wear and tear that could lead to malfunctions; this could compromise the safety of the driver and the people in the surrounding area.
Benefits
Some of the benefits of buying previously owned bucket trucks include the following:
- Proven Quality
- No need to “break in” the engine
- Lower up front cost
- Lower depreciation rate
- Reduced Insurance rate
There are many stories out there about purchasing aerial lift devices. Some of them may be positive and others could be negative. Either way, it is important to filter through all the information. For a first-time buyer, listening to stories can be beneficial; however, it does not eliminate the need to conduct research regarding the advantages, disadvantages and benefits of purchasing a new or a used vehicle before making a final decision. Deciding to purchase a bucket truck for the first time always requires some type of basic knowledge!
